Missouri Off Hand Association "OWL CREEK"Owl Creek Club is located just 4 miles south of the community of Millersburg, MO, in the Kingdom of Callaway County. Fulton is the county seat of the Kingdom and the club is located approximately 7 miles southwest of there. The official name of the club is Owl Creek Gun Club Incorporated. It was established in 1968 with 11 charter members. We met in the Phillips 66 station grease room located at the Millersburg exit and Route J for the first 2 years. In 1970 a home, south of Millersburg, was found for the club on 80 leased acres. The club can be reached by traveling State Road J, 4 miles south of Millersburg, then turning on County Road 324 about ½ mile and the club is on the right hand side just past the new concrete bridge. There are approximately 40 members in the club at present. The first several years the club shot the 2700 pistol course of the NRA on Wednesday nights. During this time we built a 10’ X 60’ galvanized metal building so the shooting wouldn’t be interrupted by the weather. About 1974 or 1975 a member, Robert McGrath, introduced a black powder pistol and rifle to the group and in a matter of months we were planning on having a black powder shoot! The shoots have been held annually. A variety of matches are held each year, bowling pin shoots, grocery shoots, and grudge matches of all sorts. Lately there has been an interest and good following of the pistol shooters. Recently a .22 night time match has stirred a lot of participation. The week of deer hunting brings the club to real life! Most members and their hunting friends and neighbors for miles around, use the club to rendezvous each night to tell the story of the day and plan for the next days hunt. Some mighty strange things go on at this time of the year! The only money making event of the club is the annual black powder shoot held on Memorial Day weekend each year. We shoot rifle, pistol, trade gun and muzzle loading shotguns during the weekend. There is modern camping, with a limited number of electric hookups and now there is water available on the site. Across the creek and behind the firing line there is room for primitive camping. During this shoot, the club hosts a Saturday night meal. We furnish the meat and bread with everyone bringing a dish to share. Some mighty fine eating has taken place at this feed. The monthly meeting dates are the first Monday of the month, unless it’s a holiday, then the meeting moves to the following Monday at 7 p.m. Every Wednesday night there is a "shoot what you bring" night and camaraderie with fellow members. As with most clubs, there have been lean times and boom times. A few years ago we started the year with $1.78 in the bank, but this year things are looking a whole lot better and participation has picked up with the new shooting elements.
